St Benedicts's Primary School

French

Intention

What are we trying to achieve?

At St. Benedict’s Primary School our chosen language of study is French. We believe that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language is acquired.

We want our children to develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between French and English. Alongside this we aim to enhance pupils’ awareness of a multilingual world and introduce an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others.

Implementation

How do we organise this?

The school uses the LCP New Generation Primary French programme delivering the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages and the renewed QCA Schemes of work for French. French vocabulary is broken down and introduced through a unit of work each half term building on previously taught language. We ensure that there is continuity and progression in both skills and content across KS2.

Through the teaching of French across KS2, children are able to ask and answer questions, use correct pronunciation and grammar, memorise words, interpret meaning, understand basic grammar, work in groups and communicate in French.

Impact

How do we know it is successful?

Children are encouraged to practise their French with other children and adults around school and registers are often taken in French. Children are building on prior learning of French throughout KS2 and are learning more and remembering more.
