Intention
What are we trying to achieve?

The starting point of our maths curriculum at St. Benedict’s Primary school is the children. It is our intention that all children are: 

  • Ambitious – they have an understanding and a love of maths through the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts.
  • Resilient – they are able to problem solve using a range of strategies. 
  • Respectful – they are enthusiastic and will confidently talk about maths. 


Implementation
How do we organise this

At St. Benedict’s, Maths No Problem is the approach used across Reception, the Inclusion Hub, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2. We teach maths through a mastery approach, enabling pupils to develop fluency, reasoning, and problemsolving skills.

Depth of Learning 

  • Topics are explored in greater depth, and pupils do not move on until they have a secure understanding of each concept. 
  • The focus is on depth rather than acceleration, ensuring learning is embedded and meaningful. 
  • Pupils are provided with rich, sophisticated challenges that consolidate and extend their understanding. 

All pupils access maths through an inclusive approach. We promote multiple methods for solving problems, helping children build selfconfidence and resilience. This approach is strengthened by: 

Staff developing children’s language, knowledge, and skills.
 

  • Children gaining a deeper and sustainable understanding of mathematical concepts. 
  • Teachers focusing on what children have learnt, rather than simply what has been taught. 
  • The use of stem sentences to support understanding. 
  • Modelling full sentences using Voice 21 strategies to enhance mathematical oracy.

Mastering Number

At St. Benedict’s, we aim to secure firm foundations in number sense for all children from Reception, including those in the Inclusion Hub. The Mastering Number programme ensures pupils develop: 

  • Strong fluency in calculation. 
  • Greater confidence and flexibility with number. 
  • A deep understanding of number relationships, supporting progression into more complex mathematical concepts. 

Over time, this approach builds the essential skills needed for success in mathematics across the school. 

 

Impact
How do we know it is successful?

Maths provision is reviewed and evaluated by teachers at all levels, ensuring continuous improvement both operationally and strategically. Staff regularly monitor and reflect on teaching and learning to identify strengths and areas for development. 

Monitoring activities include:

  • Gathering pupil voice to understand children’s experiences and perspectives. 
  • Reviewing the learning journey of each child to track progress and ensure continuity. 

Rigorous data analysis is undertaken to: 

  • Identify gaps in learning and inform targeted interventions. 
  • Shape future CPD to address identified areas for development. 
  • Compare outcomes with national and local data to evaluate effectiveness and maintain high standards. 

This systematic approach ensures that maths teaching at St. Benedict’s remains inclusive, evidencebased, and responsive to pupil needs, driving continuous improvement across the school.
