What is Inclusion at St Benedict’s?

Inclusion is the foundation of the ethos and practice at St Benedict’s: an oasis, where every child enjoys their rights and fulfils their dreams, as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Every pupil, regardless of disadvantage, SEND, or EAL, has the right to access a rich, ambitious education and to participate fully in school life. The Equalities Act is not just a statutory requirement; it is taught, understood, modelled, and lived throughout the school. This commitment to inclusion also acts as a protective safeguarding factor, ensuring pupils are known well, feel a strong sense of belonging, and are less vulnerable to harm, disengagement, or exploitation.

This includes:

  • Direct teaching of equality and protected characteristics through PSHE, assemblies, and Votes for Schools or Picture News.

  • Celebration of multicultural festivals and events that reflect our diverse community.

  • Transparency about our values and curriculum, ensuring full coverage of all subjects regardless of cultural expectations.

The approach is rooted in the values:

  • Ambition – We raise aspirations and provide rich opportunities for cultural capital until pupils have ambition for themselves.

  • Resilience – We support pupils to overcome challenges with perseverance and confidence.

  • Respect – We celebrate diversity and ensure every child feels valued and included.

Inclusion at St Benedict’s is not about lowering expectations; it is about equity and excellence. We adapt teaching and provision so that all pupils access a broad, ambitious curriculum and achieve their best. Through high-quality teaching, targeted support, and strong partnerships with families, we ensure that every child enjoys their rights and fulfils their dreams.
